Soap Box Social 5/30/2010
Well, it’s been an interesting week. I’m finally coming off of what I can only believe to be the first case of the black plague in hundreds of years (don’t worry I duct taped a poise to the cat, he’s fine.) Sadly, being so down and out health wise left a couple of days where this here site didn’t get alot of attention. Sorry about that guys. So now that a very busy week has come to an end, let me wrap it up a bit.
Of course, first and foremost on my mind is Michael Bay getting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie rights. God, just typing that makes my skin itch… Now Michael Bay has made some good movies, “The Rock” is the first that comes to mind, however lets be honest here. We know Michael Bay from his disastrous “Transformer” movies, and various other explosion riddled atrocious. Now there is some hope he can pull this off, but I’m sure not counting on it.
“Brightest Day” is also strong on my mind, not because I’m loving it, but because I have no idea what the hell is going on. Seriously?! Does anyone know what is happening here? Sadly, I think this event marks the point in time where we can say Geoff Johns has been spread far to thin. Don’t get me wrong, he has been my favorite writer for the last couple of years, but the responsibily of basically carrying the DCU has run the well dry. I hardly think he is washed up, I just think he needs to pull back the reigns some and focus on just a title or two a month for awhile.
In other DCU news, it looks like the Flash is going to be the next DC hero to race acrossed the big screen. Not much has really been said at this point except, Warner CEO Barry Meyer mentioned at a share holder’s meeting that they are looking at doing a Flash movie based on the Silver age origins of the character. Honestly, I’m a little shocked it has taken the scarlet speedster this long to get on the big screen, but I’m happy he is finally getting his due.
Finally when it comes to DC and movies let me get this out here and now. All of you that are going out to see the “Jonah Hex” movie, (you brave all be it misguided soulds) don’t let the movie influence your opinion of the comic! Seriously, the Jonah Hex comic is edgy, a little dark and highly entertaining. I can’t even watch the trailer for “Jonah Hex” and not laugh, or at the very least, look for a giant mechanized arachnid (or in layman’s terms the giant robot spider from Wild Wild West.) This fact alone doesn’t make me hopeful for the movies chances. On top of all of that you sprinkle on Megan Fox and well… DONE!
This next week should be a big one for us here at Gin and Comics. Look for a bonus strip on Memorial Day (Monday) as well as the usual Tuesday and Friday offerings. I also hope to have a great interview for you guys, as well as the return of Character Rap Sheet. Have a great Memorial weekend guys, and remember, this is more than just a three day weekend and an excuse to break out the old grill.
