Is Superhuman Experiment the Next Step for Comics?

Superhuman Experiment is unlike any other comic out there. In an attempt to fully immerse its’ readership in its own unique universe, the masterminds behind Superhuman Experiment have released a full media assault. Rather than launch a site to accompany a book, they have taken the approach that, the site is real, these experiments do exist and the comic is one of the only way to document the experience.

“In an experiment designed to create a superhuman, an accident occurred which resulted in a test subject altering his consciousness. He began to perceive truths about reality only known by the enlightened few. He became known as Test Subject-X.”

This is the first paragraph of the official synopsis released on the book. Although I must admit I’ve yet to read an issue myself, it seems pretty apparent that they’ve taken some of the concepts first introduced in “The Matrix”, applied them to superheroes and ran with it.

The site itself gives the reader an inside look at the “real life” experiments that have been documented in the book. Actual photographs, declassified dossiers and brief analysis by a narrator in the know lead you through the site. The site itself is a lot to take in. Certain elements make perfect sense as to their application, others seem odd and really only confused me.

The real story here has nothing to do with the story itself, or the art in the pages, but with the entirely new approach to the comicbook medium. Artist Jesse Starr, Amanda Stevens and Test Subject-X have become regulars on the con scene, further driving in the stake that this book is set in reality. The team never breaks character and much about the series is shrouded in mystery, with small amounts of information being leaked either through the site or in the books.

Honestly, part of me is a little confused about this whole process, but a much larger part of me thinks it’s so damn cool I don’t care. Somehow I imagine that this is what it would be like to be  Nick Fury in real life, which really is a cool experience for a comic fan. Whether or not the books are any good almost seems secondary at this point, the true enjoyment comes from feeling like you have broken down the 4th wall and are truly apart of something bigger.  To check out the site yourself go to www.superhumanexperiment.com
