Who will play Captain America?

If you’ve been keeping up with the Marvel movies then you know that just months before Avengers hits theaters, we will be treated to Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America. The only question now is, who’s worthy enough to wear the red, white and blue? Luckily the rumor that actor Will Smith was gunning for the role was just that, a rumor. Right now as it stands there are three official candidates for the role. A personal favorite of mine, Chris Evans, is listed amongst Mike Vogel and Garrett Hedlund. Those of you familiar with Fox’s take on The Fantastic Four will remember that Evans already took on a Marvel character by playing Johnny Storm, The Human Torch. Movie watchers will recognize Vogel from the 2008 film Cloverfield, while Hedlund is to be featured in the upcoming film Tron.
In this writer’s opinion, I would love to see Chris Evans be given the role. Though the Fantastic Four films weren’t exactly great, I won’t argue the fact that the Johnny Storm scenes were well done. He captured the arrogance of the character rather well and executed each scene with fantastic timing and charisma. To see him return to a Marvel film with a more serious role would be pretty promising to a dedicated fan. If given the role, Evans will have been the second actor to have played two different Marvel characters on the big screen. The first being Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed the role of Hannibal King in Blade Trinity and took on the role of Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the upcoming Deadpool film.
Marvel studios has offered whoever gets the role a $300,000 paycheck and has informed everyone that the role could be repeated in up to nine future Marvel films. Currently the list of actors who have left the role behind include Chace Crawford, John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger and Scott Portner. Fans and moviegoers will get to see Captain America, whoever that may be, on the big screen when Paramount releases the film in theatres July 22nd, 2011.
